What Flowers Have Taught Me About Life

After working with flowers every day, you start to notice things you didn't before. Not just about flowers — but about life.

One of the biggest things flowers have taught me is to slow down.

The Weirdos

Sometimes when I'm processing flowers, I'll stop for a moment and just stare at one. I'll study it — the stem, the petals, the way it curls, the way it bends, the way it grows. It's so fascinating to me. This thing grew out of the ground… just like that.

I always tell Sam, my rep at Mayesh, "give me all the weirdos you get this week." And she does. She'll send me the most random flowers, and I'll look at them and think, what is this… how does this even grow like that?

And I love it.

Sometimes it's a calla with two heads. Sometimes it's an imperfect rose. Sometimes there's a little stem or growth inside the bloom that most people would probably overlook. But to me, those are my favorites. They feel special. They feel like they have personality.

I always joke that I have so much love to give to these "weirdo" flowers — but it's true. There's something about them that makes me pause and appreciate them even more.

Slowing Down

And those small moments have started to change how I see everything else. They've taught me to slow down. To notice things. To be present.

To stop and look at the sunset. To watch the way waves hit the rocks. To notice the people walking by — each one with their own story, their own experiences, their own things they're carrying.

Life is actually so beautiful. And I don't think I always saw it that way before.

I used to rush through everything. I'm very Type A — I love structure, planning, having everything mapped out. My weeks were always full. Appointments, meetings, schedules… everything planned to a T. And while there's nothing wrong with that, I realized I wasn't always in the moment.

Flowers have taught me to practice that more. To take things day by day. To focus on what's in front of me instead of always thinking about what's next.

I'll be honest — I don't always get it right. I still get distracted with work, still fall back into that mindset sometimes. But I'm learning.

Beauty Isn't Always Perfect

And I think that's what flowers really teach you.

Beauty isn't always perfect. Sometimes it's in the imperfect rose, the double-headed calla, the strange, unexpected bloom you've never seen before. Sometimes it's in the small moments you almost miss.

And sometimes, it's just in slowing down long enough to notice.
